A Master Class in Consent - A New Offering
Look for our new article based on this workshop in press at Progress in Transplantation and scheduled for publication in March, 2012.Tentative title: “Addressing the Unintended Adverse Consequences of First Person Consent and Donor Registries.”
Purpose and Description:
A Master Class in Consent is a one-day workshop designed to provide competent, experienced organ and tissue donation coordinators an additional level of skill to employ in conversing with families about donations. Philosophically, it is based on the mounting evidence in print and in databases that First Person ( i.e., Donor Designated, Donor Authorised) Consent has unintended adverse consequences that limit the numbers of donors in mature systems.
This workshop is based on our 30 years of experience in this field and on published research. However, it is customized for each client organization, and when you book you would need to send us specific information on where you are losing donations. Examples of issues addressed for previous clients are systems problems, such as the non-referral of potential DCD donors, and specific reasons for refusals given by families. Those often include:
“He said he didn’t want to be a donor.”
“She would have told me if she wanted to donate.”
“I’m for it, but my family wouldn’t go along.”
“She’s been through enough.”
“We don’t want him cut on.”
“If he had known what he was doing, he wouldn’t have signed up.”
Workshop Support:
This workshop provides highly individualized instruction for up to 12 participants per instructor. For equipment it requires a power point projector and screen, a ring binder and writing pad for each participant, flip charts and pads, name tents and magic markers. Furniture requirements are tables for seating 6 people each and a couch, arm chair, and other chairs for role playing in groups of 12.
Personnel Costs:
Fee $2000.00 US, per instructor, plus reasonable travel and
accommodation expenses + Customization costs at $150 US
an hour. (Usually minimal, but actual costs depend on how
well-analyzed the client's data is. The better analyzed, the
less expensive.)
